Welcome to life at Uni!

University is an amazing experience. It is a time to find your feet, develop, work out who you are and who you want to be, what you want to do... It is a time to meet new friends and have new experiences.

We know that it can also be a daunting time. We know that moving away from home can mean leaving behind your support networks. Starting off at university might be the first time you've had to support yourself and manage an eating disorder on your own. University life can be stressful, there can be a lot of pressure and many people do struggle at times - if you're not loving every minute of it - you are not alone! Everyone, no matter how much they are smiling when you see them, has moments when things don't feel like they are going so well.

What can we do?

SRSH exists to help you make the most of your time at university. We run support groups in 14 universities across the country. Our groups offer an informal level of support to help you keep up motivation through recovery. We are here to support you at university, to listen and to understand! Our groups provide the opportunity to meet other people who are going through similar experiences - really, honestly and truly - you are not alone!

Our Support Groups

SRSH send out a newsletter every two weeks packed full of information about the project and recovery focused blogs. We work with individuals who have recovered from eating disorders to give you ideas and inspiration to keep going through recovery.

SRSH has worked with a team of volunteers to develop guidance for friends - we know it is not easy to support someone with an eating disorder. Our guidance is in the form of a blog - so if there are things you'd like to ask or want our thoughts on, do feel free to email admin@srsh.co.uk and we'll work on getting you an answer.

What else?

www.b-eat.co.uk
provides support and resources for individuals with eating disorders. They also provide a "helpfinder" to help you find further support in your local area.

Your Student Union
Student Unions usually have a welfare officer or our Student Advice Centre - they should be able to signpost you to further support that exists either within your university or locally.

Nightline is listening service run at universities across the country. Check out your student union website for more information about the Nightline services available at your university.

University Counselling Services offer support for free to students. Counselling Services can usually provide you with a few sessions of support.

Wisdom from some other people...

Ilona Catherine writes blogs for the independent. This is pretty much what it says on the tin: a few notes for Freshers - well worth a read! http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2011/09/15/university-and-eating-disorders-a-few-notes-for-freshers/
